Business Link Advisers bring an external perspective and their experience of working with thousands of businesses of varying sizes and sectors gives them a unique insight into what works and how to get results by focusing on the key issues. Established businesses can arrange for an on-site visit for advice while very new businesses can access support online or by phone. As part of the Business Link service, an adviser will help you look at the skills needs for your business. All advice is free, impartial and independent.

Nigel Best
Nigel has a long career with a high street bank behind him, combined with extensive experience of the needs of SMEs gained through running his own consultancy. In addition to advising on a wide range of business issues, Nigel has an in-depth insight into how businesses and banks can work together to achieve success. Nigel has lived in Norfolk for 8 years.
Graham Cann
With a career in marketing for major agencies in London behind him, Graham acquired an agency in Norfolk working in both consumer and business-to- business markets for 16 years. His experience of being an MD of his own company and his marketing focus give him an exceptional insight of the needs of SMEs.
George Green
George worked for a large company for several years, culminating in running a department with more than 500 staff. He then worked as a trainer in management development and has also run his own small business, a retail store. The combination of his private sector career together with his experience of running a small business has given him a clear and realistic understanding of the needs of SME owners and managers.
David Hogg
David has substantial senior management experience in both SMEs and large firms and has also started a business from scratch. He has a particular expertise in growth strategies and helping businesses achieve their goals in a direct and measurable way. David’s experience in a very wide variety of business areas provides clients with a sounding board to test their ideas about developing their business
Terry Johnson
Terry has owned and managed 10 businesses as well as working in both the public and private sectors. After setting up his own Advertising and PR Agency in London in the 1970s, he went on to work for the National Economic Development Office as Deputy Head of Communications. With his history of running businesses Terry brings a unique perspective to the Business Link Adviser role – enabling SMEs to learn from his experience.
Richard Mares
Richard originally trained as an agricultural engineer and then worked his way up from the shop floor to senior management positions in companies such as Massey Ferguson. He has worked for a number of major manufacturing and marketing companies both in the UK and overseas. He has lived in the Waveney Valley for more than 30 years and worked as a Business Link Adviser for the past six years. He has an in-depth understanding of the needs and aspirations of SMEs in the area.
David Sparkes
David originally trained in engineering and worked in this field before moving into Human Resource (HR) Management. He then worked in professional and managerial roles for large and small businesses in the private sector. He worked in London, abroad and other parts of the region before returning to Norfolk four years ago to join Business Link. He brings together his management experience and HR capabilities to offer SMEs all-round advice on developing and growing their business.
Petrina McManus
Petrina started her career in sales and marketing, working overseas in the leisure sector for 15 years. On returning to the UK she was a mortgage adviser before moving to the education sector where she held project management roles. She joined a regional training organisation as a business adviser in 2006, specialising in skills, then moved to Business Link in 2010. Petrina’s wide knowledge of training options, combined with her experience of working with businesses of all sizes and structures, enables her to help SMEs find the best solutions to their staff development needs. She can also advise on general business issues such as sales, marketing and finance.
Roger Hetherington
Following a science degree and a PhD, Roger was a technical and commercial manager for large multi-national companies in the food industry in his early career. He has been a Business Link Adviser for the past 14 years, based first in Suffolk then moving to his current patch in 2007. His long career as an Adviser has given him a knowledge of a wide range of businesses and the issues they face: experience which he can share with other businesses in a similar position.
Linda Byers
Linda has 15 years experience as a manager of Business Information Departments in four of London’s top ten advertising agencies, working with the automotive, FMCG, Pharmaceutical and Telecoms industries. Having reached a senior management position within the industry Linda made a sea change decision and relocated to West Norfolk where five years ago she moved smoothly into her current role of Adviser. Her previous experience qualifies her perfectly to advise SMEs on issues from finance to sales and marketing through to management and HR.
Stephen Harewood
Stephen spent nine years in the banking industry, where he started as a Call Centre Operator, and moved into Training and then Project Management before finally working as an Operations Manager. Stephen has since been involved in Skills Advice for 5 years. His first role involved liaising with groups of businesses to assess and identify local industry skills needs and then tender projects to meet the needs identified. He now works with individual companies to identify skills and business needs and propose solutions. Stephen draws on his own management experience to assist business owners and managers find the appropriate solutions for their organisations across various departments.
Julie Pauley
Julie has a background in sales and marketing and worked in both the retail and finance sectors before moving to the public sector. She then held sales roles at the Chamber of Commerce, University for Industry and Learn Direct, before starting her own consultancy business. Julie’s career in customer facing roles in a business-to-business environment, combined with her experience of being her own boss, gives her a clear understanding of the challenges that her clients face in areas such as sales, marketing, finance, HR and management. She has an in-depth knowledge of the local business environment having lived and worked in Fenland for 17 years.
Philip Westhead
Philip is well placed to understand the needs of SMEs having started his career by setting up, growing and running his own business with 15 employees on two sites. Then followed 30 years with a global brand. This lent experience in sales, marketing, training on sales and sales management roles. He gained joint bidding experience in a small multinational software company. More recently, he has undertaken consultancy as a sole trader, offering services including sales management training. Industry standard best practice and direct SME experience have given Philip an understanding of the challenges facing small businesses and potential routes to performance improvement.
Robert Possnett
Following his early career in the Parachute Regiment, Robert gained a BA and MA in Philosophy. After working as Director for a London-based charity he moved to the British Refugee Council where he held organisational and management roles. He then became Regional Director for the International Council for Voluntary Agencies operating in Bosnia and Serbia. His next step was independent consultancy, conducting an evaluation of the performance appraisal system of a major international NGO, while studying for an MBA in International Business. His wide experience of organisational development, managing teams and running his own consultancy has given Robert the knowledge and insight to help SMEs develop strategies that will deliver results.
